Data Protection Manager Azure storage

Azure DPM Register ButtonIn this post we will look at configuring online backups from Microsoft Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2012 R2 to the Windows Azure online backup service.

First you will need to logon to your Windows Azure portal and create a new storage vault to store the backups. Next you will want to create a certificate for your DPM server that you can upload to the storage vault. You can use a certificate from a mainstream Certificate Authority or you can generate a self-signed certificate using the Microsoft tool, makecert.exe, on the DPM server. Makecert.exe comes included with other free Microsoft products such as Windows SDK 8.1 or Visual Studio 2013 Express. There are instructions here on how to use makecert: . Be sure to choose a reasonable number of years for the life of your certificate. Originally I chose 12 years and Azure service refused it without saying why, as soon as I changed the lifespan to 2 years I was able to upload it to the Azure storage vault.

Then you will need to download the Azure agent for DPM from the website. The page you reach after creating a new storage vault has useful links for certificate management and a place to download the agent. After you’ve installed the Azure agent for DPM you’ll need to close and restart the DPM console. If you then go to the Management section of the console and look at the Online area you should see the version of the installed agent, as shown below. The next step is to click on the Register button highlighted in the following screen shot to begin the process to register your server with Windows Azure Backup.Azure Certiifcate Error You will need to have the SSL certificate for your DPM server that you created earlier in order to complete the registration.

Once you click “register”, you are taken through a wizard that asks you which certificate you want to use and then tells you which storage vaults in Azure are associated with that certificate. If you forgot to upload the certificate to the Azure site then you’ll see the following error:

Next the wizard allows you to configure items such as bandwidth throttling for the online backups and define a pass-phrase for the encryption system to use. You are also asked to define a recovery folder, which is a staging area where data recovered from Azure is temporarily stored before it is placed in its final destination. Make sure you read the advice in the wizard and choose a folder on a drive with enough space to accommodate recovery operations. It is best to err on the safe side of having more space than you think you’ll need, especially as what you backup, and thus need to restore, is only likely to grow with time. At the end of the wizard your DPM server is registered with Windows Azure Backup.

Independent scientific research on Gulf oil leak

by Candidus

Leak is lacking money
This is a very bad sign. If the Obama administration is serious about suing BP and other oil companies involved in the leak, this problem has to be resolved quickly. BP is indeed paying some scientists to do research into the problem but somehow the administration allowed BP to include language that may not allow that information to be made public. (Whoever allowed that should be sent packing.) How is it possible to make a case when there's little scientific research to support your case? NY Times:The only federal agency to distribute any significant grant money for oil spill research, the National Science Foundation, is out of money until the next fiscal year begins Oct

Scores of blunders sees Norfolk councils breach data laws over confidential ..  — Norfolk Eastern Daily Press
Information Commissioner Christopher Graham has previously called for councils to take their responsibilities for protecting personal data more seriously. He said in 2012: “There is clearly an underlying problem with data protection in local government.”.
